Hi, I'm Howard.

Software engineer with 10+ years of experience scaling high performance distributed systems and AI/ML infrastructure

I've work on all sorts of topics including web development, optical character recognition (OCR), graphics, ray tracing, feature streaming, real-time inference, and serving GenAI/LLM models- for both startup and large companies. If you'd like, here's my resume.

Outside of this nerdy stuff, I enjoy traveling, boxing, basketball, and dog walking- though I have a cat :).

Feel free to reach out to my socials below- maybe we can build something together!

    Pinterest

    Senior Software Engineer (AI/ML Serving)

Architected the company’s paved path for ML inference and GenAI on Kubernetes. This included pioneering a CRD with automated CICD, topology based model deployment, user defined partitioning, monitoring, sidecar injection, quota management, and custom UI. Also delivered Pinterest's first remote inference and distributed GPU model partitioning usecase. This enabled the launch of the largest model in Pinterest history.

  • 2018 - 2021

    Meta (Instagram)

    Senior Software Engineer (ML Platform)

Scaled real-time feature framework and model serving at Instgram Machine Learning Platform (IGML). This included work on building out cost attribution via distributed tracing and data lineage mapping.

  • 2017 - 2018

    Modsy

    Lead Back-end Engineer

Architected and scaled a custom, in-house 3D render pipeline that increased throughput by 3X. Also saved customer success 20 hours/week by creating an custom order management system with automated refunding.

  • 2015 - 2017

    Captricity

    Full stack Engineer

Built and scaled the core job processing pipeline that served Amazon Human Intelligence Tasks (HITs) to our crowd workforce. Optimized and tuned the prioritization mechanism based on service level agreement (SLA), perceieved effort, and pricing. Also, worked on creating a regex-like model to represent different types of forms so that Captricity could process documents that had optional, repeating, and missing pages.

  • 2011 - 2015

    UC Berkeley

Graduated with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Notable coursework includes: Algorithms, Graphics, Databases, Computational Photography, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning.

  • Summer 2014

    Natero

    Software Intern

Implemented cohort analysis by chaining Hadoop MapReduce jobs together. Built by creating a JSON precompiler that took user specified rules and automatically generated configuration components that could be used to run custom MR jobs.

  • Summer 2013

    Flowbit

    Sofware and Hardware Intern

Designed, programmed, and tested an Arduino-based prototype that remotely monitors water usage in Third World countries.
